MU 106
John Lennon and Paul McCartney, their development as composers, and a comparison of their approaches to song writing. MU 106 is for students who love music, but who have not necessarily studied music. Among other things, we will compare what Lennon, McCartney, and others have said about their songs, analyse aspects of musical structure (such as melody and harmony), and consider the relationship between text and music. An important part of this class is learning how to listen. Outside the classroom students will have extensive listening assignments, weekly evening video showings, and two evening lectures by guest scholars. The principal method of evaluation will be by examination. (Fulfills the arts-B component of the breadth requirement.) I will add more information to this site during the summer of 2001.
