Students will write four short essays (500-words), one on each of the four class study topics. |

Save each essay as a Word .doc or .docx file and then send it to me as an email attachment. |
| 3. |
The essays are worth 40% of your grade derived by averaging your four essay scores. |

| Class Communication (50%) |
| 1. |
Individual students will make one ungraded presentation ("Water to a Fish") and two graded in-class presentations ("Beautiful Blue Jay" and "Mahillon's Dilemma"). These presentations are worth 20% of your grade derived by averaging your two scores. |
| 2. |
Students will also participate in a team presentation ("Pythagoras Redux"). The class will divide into teams, each of which will present their findings. This presentation is worth 20% of your grade and derives half from your individual contribution and half from your team's work. |
| 3. |
The instructor expects students to present parts of the readings and to lead class discussions as a normal part of the course. Students will also complete in-class written assignments designed to help set baseline knowledge statements. Class participation is worth 10% of your grade and reflects your ability to respond to questions and to engage in class discussions. |
