Written Communication (50%)
1. Students will write four short essays (500-words), one on each of the four class study topics.
2. Save each essay as a Word .doc or .docx file and then send it to me as an email attachment.
3. The essays are worth 40% of your grade derived by averaging your four essay scores.
Class Communication (50%)
1. Individual students will make one ungraded presentation ("Water to a Fish") and two graded in-class presentations ("Beautiful Blue Jay" and "Mahillon's Dilemma"). These presentations are worth 20% of your grade derived by averaging your two scores.
2. Students will also participate in a team presentation ("Pythagoras Redux"). The class will divide into teams, each of which will present their findings. This presentation is worth 20% of your grade and derives half from your individual contribution and half from your team's work.
3. The instructor expects students to present parts of the readings and to lead class discussions as a normal part of the course. Students will also complete in-class written assignments designed to help set baseline knowledge statements. Class participation is worth 10% of your grade and reflects your ability to respond to questions and to engage in class discussions.
Scores reflect (a) assignment preparation, (b) coherence, (c) content, and (d) originality.
Grading
