208. Music and Culture. An intercultural introduction to
music as culture. Topics include voice types, instrument categorizations,
pitch and time systems, musical structure, transcription/notation,
and ethnography. |
| Goals: Music presents profound challenges to anyone who seeks to understand even its most fundamental questions. Students in this course consider how humans have constructed music, how the voice represents more than just sound, how our thinking about musical instruments betrays our world views, and how culture and physics clash in the realm of pitch. Learning comes through discussion of readings, hands-on experiments, and class presentations. |
