Background & bibliographic reading

I attached a bibliography of recommended readings (primary & secondary sources) at the end of the syllabus for consultation as you prepare your group presentations and develop your individual research projects. Some of these books are on open reserve at Scribner Library. For a general history of Latin America, see Benjamin Keen, A History of Latin America or John C. Chasteen, Born in Blood & Fire.

For bibliographic help finding scholarly articles and books on Latin American topics, I highly recommend that you consult the Hispanic American Periodical Index and the Handbook on Latin American Studies (HLAS), both available on-line at the Scribner Library "Resources for History" webpage (http://www.skidmore.edu/library/subjects/history.htm).

Skidmore subscribes to several journals that focus on Latin America, including the Journal of Latin American Studies and the review of the North American Conferences on Latin America (NACLA). NACLA is particularly good with brief articles by scholars about contemporary issues presented thematically--war, gender, race, violence, US presence, etc.. In addition, the principal journals on Latin American History (Hispanic America Historical Review, The Journal of Latin American Studies, Latin American Research Review) can be found through J-STOR, an on-line catalogue of periodicals (http://www.jstor.org) to which Skidmore subscribes (This catalogue is subscription-based and only available on campus). In addition, many newspapers (from the US & Latin America) are available on-line, and can be found using U. Texas' Latin American Network (LANIC) (http://lanic.utexas.edu/la/region/news/). US newspapers that regularly publish feature articles on Latin America include the New York Times, Washington Post & Miami Herald.
