Lassen Volcano National Park Bumpass Hell Bumpass Hell is a hot spring area on the flanks of Lassen Volcano. A short hike took us up over a ridge and then downward to the springs. It is probably called "hell" because of the steaming pots and the sulpherous smell.
Part way up the trail to Bumpass Hell, you get a nice
view of Brokeoff Mountain,
Mountain Heather on a talus slope along the trail.
Yellow flowers.
White Flowers.
Across the ridge and a short way down you can see Bumpass Hell
One of several pools.
The Big Boiler
One of the mud pots.
The black scum on this pool is pyrite.
The many colors of Bumpass Hell.
