Sequoia and King Canyon National Parks

The sequoias are not the redwoods of Northern California, much to my surprise. However they are the tallest trees and largest living things on earth. The original stands of sequoias have been devastated by logging even though they are not good for lumber, they shatter when they hit the ground. The trees saved by the National Park are magnificent.

Sequoia and King Canyon have been joined into one administrative unit.

In the center is the General Sherman Tree.
The largest growing thing on earth.

Looking up at the General Sherman Tree from the base.
It is 274.9 feet tall, 36.5 feet diameter and 102.6 feet circumference at the base.

The sequoias along the Congress Trail.

A small waterfall along the trail.
Notice that sequoia wood is very brittle and shatters on impact.

The McKinley Tree.
