What is 500 gigabaud?

How much information does 500 gigabaud represent?

  1. A typical single-spaced typed page has 65 columns and 55 lines. This is 3,500 characters which requires about 30,000 binary bits.

  2. Since 500 gigabaud is 500 billion bits per second, this represents about 15 million typed pages per second.

  3. If a typical book manuscript contains about 1,000 typed pages of original manuscript, this represents enough capacity to transmit about 15,000 books every second.

  4. Since the Skidmore library holds about 350,000 books, it would take about 23 seconds to transmit the entire contents of the library over a 500 Gigabaud connection!
