CITS services are excessively decentralized across campus. For example, Harder Hall houses the User Services staff even though most of the student users work at the Library. Similarly, some minor repair services take place in Harder, while major repairs are located below the library walkway. Some forms of curricular support take place in Harder, others in the Library, and still more at the Media Center in Palamountain Hall. This arrangement leads to user confusion over where to go for assistance, shuttling equipment and users between centers, and often imperfect coordination among the centers.
The Library has avoided any comparable decentralization problems. This may be only a temporary condition, however, since several parts of the library are already becoming crowded, and there is no room for any significant expansion of services or personnel. For example, there is no available site within the library for a new Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning even though the library would be an ideal location for such a resource.
The College should begin planning for the eventual creation of an Instructional Support Center. Its ideal location would be adjacent to the Scribner Library, and it should house both the current CITS centers and the Library's outreach services such as bibliographic instruction, faculty web support, and the proposed CETL.
