AJ News Literacy: A Personal Assessment

Although all sections of EN 105 fulfill Skidmore's Expository Writing Requirement, I am assuming that you selected this section because you have a personal interest in the news, current events, journalism, the media, etc. In your introductory letter, you introduced yourself to me as a writer, discussing your strengths and weaknesses as a writer and thus your personal writing goals for the course. In this second, informal, ungraded introductory assignment, you are to introduce yourself again, but this time as a news "consumer." What's your news literacy? Is being informed of the news important to you: why or why not? What news venues do you consume or rely upon? Why? Do you have any experience in reporting the news? Do you work for the Skidmore News or SkidTV? Were you involved in such activities in high school? How does the theme of our writing seminar connect to the liberal arts education you are receiving at Skidmore? How does it connect to your (potential) major? How might being aware of the news inform your studies and how might your studies inform your understanding of the news? Why does being informed matter anyway?

Use these questions as a guide for your assessment.
