Course Objectives

The objectives for Evolving Canon 1 section 2 are as follows:

	to introduce you to the concept of a canon
	to foster your understanding of the role of a canon within literary studies
	to introduce you to the sweep of early literature from Classical Greece to Shakespeare that informs our modern literary tradition
	to introduce you to some of the "great books" of Western literature
	to learn to make connections among the texts we are studying
	to understand works in their literary, historical, and cultural contexts
	to learn literary terminology relevant to the discussion of Western literature
	to practice "close reading" of literary texts
	to introduce you to the conventions for writing about literature
	to practice writing about literature
