Discipline-Specific Characteristics
for Academic Papers

American Studies

The following are some characteristics of American Studies papers, based on our examination of an AM 221 paper:

  • A self-reflexive question, reflecting the disciplines concern for methodology
  • The notion of a contested past
  • A variety of sources
  • Multiple perspectives
  • Historical accuracy: evidence students use should be grounded in historical research
