Shorter Writing #2 asked you to focus very specifically on an example of the ways in which people negotiate difference.  It asked for both description and analysis.  Writing Project #3 essentially asks you to expand and develop Shorter Writing #2 into a three-page essay.

You should still do both description and analysis, but most of this paper should be analytical rather than descriptive.  You might want to devote your first paragraph or so to description and the rest of the paper to analysis.  You'll find the directions for your journal assignment useful in generating questions for analysis. 

Your paper should have a clearly argumentative thesis.  It may be useful to think of your thesis in the following format: This behavior/ritual/cultural text reveals                             .

While you may use bits and pieces of Shorter Writing #2 in this assignment, you shouldn't simply drop that one-page essay into this three-page essay.

Remember to turn in your journal entries with your draft.

NOTE: While it will probably be an advantage to write this essay on the same topic you explored in your shorter writing, you don't have to do so.  If you're bored or no longer enthused about your topic, feel free to move on.
