EN227--Introduction to African American Literature

COURSE GOALS
  • Students will become acquainted with some of the most important movements and writers in African American literary history.
  • Students will develop their ability to think critically and interpretively about literary work.
  • Students will improve their ability to write analytically about literature.
CLASS FORMAT
This is not a lecture course. We will work, as a group, toward a collective understanding and appreciation of the works assigned. Students are expected to participate in class discussions.
REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING
  • two 2-page essays (10 per cent each) 
  • one 8-page essay (25 per cent)
  • midterm exam (20 percent)
  • final exam (25 per cent)
  • classroom participation (10 per cent)
  • students are required to keep up with the reading assignments
ABSENCES
Each student is allowed two absences. Each subsequent absence will lower the final grade by one third of a grade.
PAPERS
Late papers will be penalized one letter grade for each day that they are late.  I encourage you to talk with me in my office about paper topics, or to show me drafts in advance.
