Program of Events, EUROSIM '98
Sunday, January 11:
- Visit to Leuven
- This trip to the City of Leuven, Belgium, began by walking through the city with students from KU Leuven, and concluded with a reception offered by the City of Leuven in the City Hall.
Monday, January 12:
- Country Meetings - 10:00
- At this time, the delegations from American schools and the delegations from European schools meet for the first time and discuss their opinions of the proposal.
- Opening Ceremony - 2:00
- At this opening ceremony the students were greeted by Dr. Luc Reychler, Professor of International Relations, KU Leuven, Dr. Barbara Jancar, NYCEUSS Director, and Jos De la Haye, EUROSIM Coordinator.
- Keynote Speakers - 2:30
- The three keynote speakers were Erik Derycke, Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alan Blinken, U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, and Jos Chabert, Minister of the Brussels Capital Region.
- Introduction of Draft Proposal by the Commission - 4:30
- At this point, the European Commission reviews it's proposal with the Ministers and the members of the Parliament and the Committee of the Regions.
- Party/Organizational Meetings - 5:00
- During this session, the Ministers present their delegations' national statements while the Members of the European Parliament and the Committee of the Regions meet with their parties to elect chairs and rapporteurs.
- Opening Reception - 7:00
- This reception was held at the Ibis Hotel and the students were joined by Luc Van den Brande, Minister-President of the Flemish Community.
Tuesday, January 13:
- Discussion of Draft Resolution - 9:00
- This is the first session in which the proposal is discussed thoroughly.
- Expert Testimony - 10:00
- Discussion of Draft Resolution - 11:15
- European Parliamentary Political Party Meetings - 4:45
- European Parliament Plenary Session - 5:45
- At this point, the European Parliament has a chance to discuss the proposal all together.
- Meeting of Ministers and COREPERs - 7:00
Wednesday, January 14:
- Prime Ministers and COREPERs meet - 7:00
- Presentation of Common Position - 9:00
- E.P. meets to discuss Common Position and vote - 9:30
- Formulation of opinion on Common Position - 10:30
- Heads of Government and Foreign Minister meetings - 3:15
- E.P. Plenary Session - 3:15
- Commmission receives amended Common Position - 5:55
- Banquet - 7:30
Thursday, January 15:
- Commission prepares opinion - 7:00
- Council of Ministers meeting - 9:00
- Heads of Government Summit - 9:30
- Closing Ceremony - 10:30
- This closing ceremony included remarks by Dietrich Pause, Secretary General of the Committee of the Regions, Johan Sauwens, Member of the Council of the Regions, and Ken Bodfish, Deputy of the Council of Brighton and Hove
- Press Conference - 12:30
- Closing Luncheon - 12:00
