IM Rules For 5 on 5 Basketball

 

  1. STARTING THE GAME: Five players will constitute a team. A minimum of five (5) are needed to start /continue a game. A 10 minute grace period will be given before a game is called as a forfeit. There is a seven (7) player game roster limit.
  2. EQUIPMENT: A basketball will be provided by Skidmore College. The first team listed will wear light colored t-shirts. The second team listed will wear dark colored T-shirts. (i.e. 1 v 2 ) team one would be in lights and team two would be in darks). Proper shoes are required. No jogging or black soled shoes, cleats or street shoes are permitted. All jewelry must be removed before start of game.
  3. PLAYING TIME: Games shall consist of two (2) twenty (20) minute halves running time with two (2) time-outs per game-one per half. Each time out will last no longer than one (1) minute. An official’s time-out will be called in the case of injury, emergency or incident in which the official will determine the length of the time-out. There will be a three (3) minute break between periods. *the clock will be stopped on all whistles (dead balls, fouls, etc) during the last two (2) minutes of the game.
  4. OVERTIME: In case of a tie game, there will be a two (2) minute overtime with the team ahead at the end of play declared the winner. Each team is allowed one (1) time-out per overtime period.
  5. THREE POINT SHOTS: The three point shot will be in effect.
  6. THREE SECOND RULE: The three-second lane violation will be in effect.
  7. SUBSTITUTION: Free substitution shall be permitted during the game. SUBSTITUTIONS MAY ONLY ENTER THE GAME AT THE OFFICIAL’S SIGNAL.
  8. DUNKING: There will be no dunking in any dead-ball situation (before, during or after the game). The penalty for dunking is a technical foul. Dunking is allowed in live play.
  9. PERSONAL FOULS: The clock will be stopped on all free throw shots. The 1-and-1 bonus situation will be in effect on the 7th team foul per half. The two-point bonus situation will be in effect on the 10th team foul per half. All fouls, including double and technical fouls, will be counted into the player and team foul tallies. Technical fouls count as personal fouls. Two technical fouls lead to an ejection and suspension from the next game. For all common fouls before the bonus, the ball will be awarded to the offended team out of bounds nearest the spot where the foul occurred. The official must handle the ball before it is thrown in. Fouls committed during the act of shooting will be administered as follows:
  10. a) One (1) free throw after a successful field goal attempt. b) Two (2) free throws after an unsuccessful field goal attempt.

  11. A ball striking the side or the underside of the backboard shall be in play. A ball that strikes the basket supports or a ball that crosses over the backboard shall be out of bounds.
  12. JUMP BALLS: Jump balls will be taken at half court between any two opponents: -at the beginning of the game.
  13. -at the beginning of each period.

    -following a double foul.

  14. VIOLATIONS: Other violations include:
      1. traveling with the ball.
      2. double dribble.
      3. stepping on, or over the restraining line on a free throw until the ball leaves the hands of the free throw shooter.

-if committed by defense when free throw is made, substitute free throw is awarded.

-if committed by the offense when free throw is made, basket does not count .

  1. PENALTY FOR VIOLATIONS A-C: Opponents take ball out of bounds close to where the violation occurred.
  2. REMOVAL FROM GAME: A player shall be removed from the game under the following situations:
      1. a player receiving a fifth personal foul.
      2. a player receiving a second technical foul.
      3. a player intentionally striking another player, a spectator or an official.

 

If a player is disqualified for any unsportsman-like act, he will be suspended from league play until reinstated by the Recreation Sports Department. All rules not covered by this supplement shall be governed by the official N.C.A.A Basketball Rule Book.
