PALMTN Emerson Auditorium: Who Includes the Future Teachers? Teacher Education and Inclusion in Chile In this talk, Dr. Javier Campos will be discussing his research on preparing Chilean educators for inclusive practice. Over the past three decades, Chile has progressively incorporated inclusion into its educational policies and regulatory frameworks, following broader international commitments emerging from the Salamanca Statement. While these efforts initially focused on the school system, more recent reforms have extended the principles of inclusion to higher education. This shift has coincided with a significant expansion and diversification of university enrollment.These transformations pose a particular challenge for teacher education. Future teachers are expected to become agents of inclusion: they must learn to recognize and address exclusion and to create more inclusive schools and classrooms. At the same time, however, they are university students themselves, navigating institutions that must respond to increasingly diverse student populations and ensure their participation, learning, and sense of belonging.Drawing on a three-year research project conducted across four Chilean universities, this presentation examines this tension by asking not only how future teachers learn to include, but also how the institutions preparing them include future teachers themselves. Dr. Campos has a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts and is an assistant professor at the Universidad de Austral Chile in Valdivia, Chile. Her career has spanned the highest levels of finance, government and journalism as an officer at Morgan Stanley, as chief of staff of the White House’s Council of Economic Advisors and as bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal.Choi was the first ever chief sustainability officer on Wall Street. She also served as chief marketing officer (CMO) and was a member of Morgan Stanley’s Global Management Committee. During her tenure as CMO, she is credited with stewarding the favorability of the venerable financial services brand to all-time highs across all global markets.An early advocate for sustainable investing, she proposed and founded the institution’s Global Sustainable Finance Group and the Institute for Sustainable Investing. She also founded and led its Community Development Finance Group, investing more than $20 billion to strengthen low-income communities.Choi graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Business School. She was a White House Fellow, Fulbright Scholar and David Rockefeller Fellow. Blassingame, a professor at Scripps College, will reflect on her work as proprietor of Primrose Press, exploring how printmaking and book arts can promote discussion of issues of race, racism, memory, and history. Drawing on recent artist’s book projects such as African American: A Handbook, White: A Handbook, and The Benefits of Slavery, she will examine how material form, typography, and process reveal hidden narratives that encourage questioning of inherited assumptions. Led by multi-GRAMMY Award-winning guitarist and vocalist Clay Ross, the ensemble binds timeless American folk songs with jazz sophistication, country twang, West African hypnotics, and East Asian ornamentation. A southern-born roots music aficionado, Ross is also the founder of the world-renowned Gullah group Ranky Tanky. In APQ, Ross intertwines with other Grammy-winning artists: Falguni Shah, an eleventh-generation Hindustani classical vocalist, Moto Fukushima, an internationally acclaimed Issei jazz bassist, and Rudy Royston, a renowned jazz drummer whose fibers were honed by African American church traditions. Together, they approach American roots music as a living practice: something carried, questioned, transformed, and passed on. Falu (Faluguni Shah) is a GRAMMY Award-winning artist acclaimed for her innovative fusion of modern styles with classical Indian vocal traditions. She has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Wyclef Jean, Philip Glass, Ricky Martin, Blues Traveler, and A.R. Rahman. Notably, Falu performed at the world's largest stadium before 132,000 attendees, an event broadcast to billions globally. She has graced the GRAMMYs pre-telecast ceremony, entertained President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House, and was the featured performer at the Time 100 Gala in 2009. Hailed by The New York Times as “a virtuosic performer in full command of her instrument and powers,” she is known in the international jazz world simply as ‘Somi’. Her 2021Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album made her the first African woman ever nominated in any of the Grammy jazz categories, as well as the first Rwandan or Ugandan ever nominated for a Grammy. Her last release, Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba, was a companion project to the critically acclaimed original musical “Dreaming Zenzile” that Somi also wrote and starred in Off-Broadway as a tribute to the great South African singer and activist.
