This question has animated the research of Greenberg Middle East Scholar-in-Residence Professor Avi Rubin and Skidmore’s Associate Professor Murat C. Yildiz. While Rubin has examined these shifts through the lens of legal reform and bureaucratic halls, Yildiz has explored them in sports clubs and the city’s public spaces. This public conversation brings together Rubin and Yıldız to discuss two ends of the late Ottoman experience: the state’s effort to institutionalize justice and order through law, and society’s aspiration to forge a new "body" and identity through bodily culture and leisure. Together, Rubin and Yildiz will explore why (Ottoman) history matters when thinking about the present Middle East and explore how Ottomans did not merely adopt foreign models but instead crafted a distinct local modernity of their own whose legacies continue to live in today.Avi Rubin earned his Ph.D. in History and Middle East Studies from Harvard University (2006) before becoming a faculty member in the Department of Middle East Studies at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. A specialist in the socio-legal history of the late Ottoman Empire, Rubin has published extensively on legal change in the modern era, exploring themes such as codification, legal culture, political trials, and the rule of law. His first monograph, Ottoman Nizamiye Courts: Law and Modernity (2011), is a pioneering, "law-in-action" study that revised our understanding of nineteenth-century Ottoman legal reform. His second book, Ottoman Rule of Law and the Modern Political Trial: The Yildiz Case (2018), examines the emergence of a new culture of legalism during the late Ottoman period. Building on this trajectory, his current research explores the legalist foundations of modern Turkish autocracy by tracing the continuities between the Hamidian regime and the early Republic. Murat C. Yildiz is Associate Professor in the Department of History at Skidmore College. He is author of The Ottoman World of Sports: Refashioning Bodies, Men, and Communities in Late Imperial Istanbul (University of Texas Press, 2026). Ayalon asserts that religious identities and communal cooperation were always present in the Ottoman Empire, but the boundaries between confessional communities were porous. Indeed, religion was “neither the sole nor the primary social divider in Ottoman society at large.” The presentation provides a historical lens into natural disasters that affected Jewish communities in the Middle East and offers lessons on how we can approach current environmental challenges, climate change, and natural disasters.Ayalon is a social historian of the Middle East, Ottoman Empire, Sephardic Jews, and Israel, and author of two books: Natural Disasters in the Ottoman Empire: Plague, Famine, and Other Misfortunes (Cambridge University Press, 2015), and Ottoman Jewry: Leadership, Charity, and Literacy (Brill, 2025). About the ParticipantsPam Tanowitz is a celebrated New York–based choreographer and founder of Pam Tanowitz Dance who has steadily delineated her own dance language through decades of research and creation. She is the first-ever choreographer in residence at the Fisher Center at Bard in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and is an assistant professor of professional practice at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Other honors include the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award, LMCC Liberty Award for Artistic Leadership, Doris Duke Artist Award, Herb Alpert Award, BAC Cage Cunningham Fellowship, and Bessie Awards, among others. She has created works for The Australian Ballet, New York City Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, Paul Taylor American Modern Dance, The Royal Ballet, Kennedy Center’s Ballet Across America, Vail Dance Festival, Juilliard Dance, Ballet Austin, and New York Theatre Ballet. Originally from New Rochelle, New York, Tanowitz holds degrees from Ohio State University and Sarah Lawrence College. Brooklyn–based artist Sarah Crowner’s diverse practice explores the spaces where geometry abuts gesture, materiality merges with composition, and the graphic confronts the handmade. Incorporating two- and three-dimensional works across a variety of media (painting, sculpture, installation, and set design), Crowner’s work points to an expanded field of painting, investigating the relationship between the element and the whole, and how parts build an entirety. Her work is held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; The Contemporary Austin; Dallas Museum of Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York. Her novel Miss Fuller was shortlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award; she has also published short fiction in Little Star, Electric Literature, and The Southampton Review, and is a contributor of reviews and essays to The New York Review of Books and Book Post, among other journals. She teaches at Skidmore College and is currently at work on a volume of new and selected poems. Brian Lawson, Assistant Professor of Dance at Skidmore, is a dance performer and educator. He graduated summa cum laude with a BFA in dance performance from SUNY Purchase in 2010. Lawson performed with Pam Tanowitz Dance before joining the Mark Morris Dance Group in 2011. With MMDG, he originated numerous roles and had the pleasure of touring the US and the world performing Morris’s dances. He earned his MFA in Dance from the University of Washington in 2020 and began teaching at Skidmore in 2022. His choreographic research is collaborative in nature and focuses on queerness in concert dance. He also engages in pedagogical research with regard to contemporary balletic practices. He continues to research via performance as a dancer with Pam Tanowitz Dance and MMDG. Lawson enjoys teaching dance to diverse populations and has given master classes at Purchase College, NYU Tisch, and the American Dance Festival, among others. He acts as a guest ballet teacher for the José Limón Dance Company, Mark Morris Dance Group, and Gibney Dance. About The McCormack Endowed Visiting Artist-Scholar ResidencyThe McCormack Endowed Visiting Artist-Scholar Residency exemplifies Skidmore’s commitment to experiential learning, close faculty-student collaboration, and interdisciplinary exploration. In 2026, the Metropolitan Museum of Art featured newly commissioned footage of Lewis in Musical Bodies, an exhibition tracing the relationship between music and the human body across 4,000 years.Born in Sydney, Australia, Lewis grew up whistling, and eventually pursued it as a career. After her parents showed her the documentary Pucker Up: The Fine Art of Whistling, she entered her first whistling competition, the 2012 International Whistlers Convention in North Carolina. She later won first place in the Live Band Accompaniment Division at 2015’s Masters of Musical Whistling competition in Los Angeles. Her debut EP The Forgotten Edge was released in 2021 on Jagjaguwar, after the label saw her lounge show Café Molly in LA. For her final project, student Grace Higginbotham developed a proposal for an engagement with Lewis, which her classmates ultimately selected to move forward. Zankel then worked directly with Lewis to grow that student-generated idea into a weeklong residency shaped around her artistry, including performances with the Skidmore Orchestra and her own band. Trained in Tuvan music since childhood, the members of Alash bring deep knowledge of traditional instruments, song forms, and vocal techniques to performances that are both rooted and contemporary.What sets Alash apart is their careful integration of modern influences into traditional Tuvan music. Their songs may include complex harmonies, Western instruments, or contemporary forms, but the sound and spirit remain distinctly Tuvan.
