Transparent plastic material was patented by Alexander Parkes in Birmingham, United Kingdom in 1856- he called it Parkensine and it is made from cellulose treated with nitric acid. On February 25th, 1958 Clarence M. Welch was issued a patent from the United States Patent Office for the plastic spoon. On December 1st, 1974 Hubert E. Christian and David W. Lee of Phoenix, Arizona were issued a patent by the United States Patent Office for their design of the plastic spoon.
