Like all breads, it's difficult to say when sourdough was first created, but a sourdough from 3700 BC was excavated in Switzerland.
Fact:
Sourdough was brought to both Northern California and Alaska/Western Canada along with the gold rush in those areas. A "sourdough" is someone who has spent an entire winter north of the arctic circle.
