Joseph L. Underwood is a PhD candidate from Lexington, Kentucky. With degrees in art
history and art criticism, he has conducted research in Senegal, North Africa, France,
Japan and China as a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholar and a James G. Stemler Scholar. He
has also held positions at the University of Kentucky Art Museum, Musée Boribana (Dakar),
The Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Smithsonian National Museum
for African Art.
Research Interests
Modern and contemporary art in Africa, especially in Senegal, and on exhibition practices
at fairs, biennials, and museums.
