COVID-19 guidance for upcoming events

April 11, 2022

Dear Students,

Testing positivity rates have been rising in the Capital Region, and indeed across New York. When that happens, we tend to see increased cases on our campus, as we have in the past week. That being said, our CDC community level continues to be in the “low” range, and we continue to follow all CDC and local health guidance in all our policies and protocols. In line with this guidance, our optional masking practices remain in place.

Skidmore remains mask supportive and mask friendly in all spaces, including at upcoming indoor and outdoor events. Free KN95 masks continue to be available to all on campus and will be made easily accessible at all events and gatherings.

As we near the last month of the spring semester, several events and gatherings are in the planning stages. A cross-functional administrative team has been working with registered student organization leaders to assist with the proposal process. Parameters for these events are considered on a case-by-case basis and may include additional required testing and safety measures. ComFest and Spring Fling are recent examples. We are continuing to work with student leaders in the hope of bringing to fruition Junior Ring, Earth Day, The Big Show, and Senior Week (for May/August graduating seniors). While we certainly hope it is not the case, please know that the event status can change depending on a range of factors.

At this time, we do not anticipate changes to our current gathering guidelines. However, out of an abundance of caution, to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and to ensure all those who wish to attend are as comfortable doing so as possible, students who plan to attend upcoming events are strongly encouraged to take a rapid test at their convenience within 48 hours prior to attending, or comply with any additional testing requirements communicated by event organizers. For example, students will be required to take a PCR test this week and show a “cleared” status in CoVerified in order to gain entry to Junior Ring scheduled for this Saturday. Individuals experiencing any symptoms are asked to stay home.

As a reminder, free rapid tests are always available to students at Campus Safety by calling ahead, or by appointment at Health Services for individuals who are symptomatic. If you are symptomatic, please mask up around others and get tested. PCR testing remains available to anyone on Tuesdays from noon to 6 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to noon in Sussman Village Apartment A1. I know many students continue to utilize these options as needed, although testing is no longer required — a step that remains very much in line with other Colleges and our peer institutions.

We continue to closely monitor the overall health situation carefully and will adjust when needed and communicate updates in a timely manner.

Sincerely,

Adrian Bautista
