How To's of Handshake

Handshake Have you said hello to Handshake?

Handshake is a career center database, which includes an online application system to connect employers to students. Within Handshake, employers are able to post and promote internships, fellowships and job opportunities to current undergraduate students.

Handshake supports several key functions of the CDC including:

  •  Appointments for career counseling
  • Event registration
  • Promotion of jobs, internships, and employers
  • Resume/cover letter submission for hundreds of opportunities
  • Scheduling on-campus interviews, and interviews within recruitment programs such as Career and Internship Connections (CIC) and Skidmore Recruitment Day.

How to register for a Handshake account:
  • Go to skidmore.joinhandshake.com
  • Click on the Sign Up Here button located towards the top right-hand corner of the screen.
  • Complete your personal information and create a password.
    • Note: Use your skidmore.edu email address.
  • Check the box to agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
  • Click Create Account.
  • An email link will be sent to the email address you used, click on that Link to complete Handshake account registration.
How to upload your career documents in Handshake:
  • Select Documents from the drop down under your name in the top menu bar.
  • Select Add New Documents.
  • Drag and drop a Word or PDF from your computer.
  • Click Add Document.
  • Title your document and select from the drop down the Document Type (resume, cover letter).
How to search for jobs and internships:
  • Make sure you have an active Handshake Account.
  • Click Jobs at the top of the home screen.
  • To find opportunities select Job Search.
    • Enter types of jobs you are interested in using key words, job titles, employers, or search by location. Also, add additional filters such as full time, part time, internship, industry etc.
  • Once all criteria are selected hit Enter.
How to understand your “Status” in Handshake?
  • Primary – a candidate that has been selected to interview.
  • Alternate – a candidate that is still being considered by the organization.
  • Pending – the candidate’s application has not yet been reviewed by the employer.
  • Declined – the organization has decided to move in a different direction.
How to schedule an interview time:
  • Go to Handshake, select Jobs
  • Select Application in the menu bar from the top of the screen.
  • On the left-hand navigation, under Status check the box that is labeled “Primary”
  • Once the primary box is checked, a list of all jobs with a primary status will appear.
  • Click on the job you wish to set up an interview time slot.
  • A message will appear - “If you apply and are selected to interview, you will see the interview schedule appear here!”
  • Within the interview schedule under Action click the TAKE SLOT button associated with the time you wish to select.

NOTE: All jobs related to Skidmore Recruitment Day will be posted by Monday, January 27, 2020. The student application deadline to apply is Monday, February 3, 2020 by 11:55p.m.

If selected as a PRIMARY candidate for Skidmore Recruitment Day interview schedules will open Wednesday, February 12 at 4p.m. and close Wednesday, February 19 by 11:55p.m. A candidate in ALTERNATE status will have access to the signup for an interview beginning Sunday, February 16 at 4p.m to Wednesday, February 19 at 11: 55p.m. Candidates that are NOT being offered an interview opportunity for Skidmore Recruitment Day will be notified by Friday, February 21, 2020.
