ConnectMORE
Friday, November 15
3-4:30 p.m. in the Weller Room (Library 212)

Have you ever worried about how best to help a student in crisis? How about a student who appears to be having a panic attack during an exam? Or a student who lets you know they are going home for two weeks because a sibling is seriously ill?

This special edition of ConnectMORE, facilitated by Leya Moore, Ph.D. and Julia Routbort, Ph.D., is designed to help faculty members respond empathically and effectively to students experiencing moments of crisis, distress and or mental health challenges. The 90 minute workshop is interactive and experiential. Well focus on enhancing listening, asking and responding skills and on making sure you know about campus resources (and know how to access them). Well also talk about how to set limits consistently and empathically in ways that fit your pedagogy and style. Youll get some ConnectMORE swag and a sticker you can choose to display your support for student mental health.

Please RSVP to mailto:kford@skidmore.eduby November 11. If you have questions about the workshop, please contact jroutbor@skidmore.edu or lmoore2@skidmore.edu.

Ruth Hernndez

Ruth Marleen Hernndez is a sociologist committed to enacting social change through scholarship and teaching. Her research and teaching interests lie in the intersection of gender, international migration, and Latinx communities. Her current research project examines how Mexican migrant families create and maintain transnational ties via social justice theater and other cultural performances.

In her classes, Professor Hernndez draws on her experience as an activist and board member for NGOs in Mexico and the U.S. to enrich classroom dialogue about social justice issues, forging a bridge between academia and the broader community.

In the past, she has co-taught classes with social justice advocates from Mexico, documentary filmmakers, and former students immersed in social justice efforts. At Skidmore College, Professor Hernndez has developed a course (SOC 251D Latinx Communities) that gives students applied sociology skills. Together with the Saratoga Immigration Coalition (SIC), her students have worked on programming to raise awareness about the inequities Latinx migrants face in the local community. She continues this relationship and plans to develop this aspect of her course further this coming spring.

Finally, Professor Hernndezs family history of migration she was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and migrated to Los Angeles, California at the age of one as well as her intersecting identities as a first-generation college graduate from a working-class background, has impacted how she mentors students, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds.

Hello, Hello, Hello! Im Malchijah Hoskins and I am a Sophomore from Jersey City, NJ. I intend on majoring in Sociology and minoring in Intergroup Relations. On-campus Im involved in Student Government Association as VP for Inclusion and Outreach. My focus in SGA is on the treatment of student workers on campus, updating SGAs policy on diversity equity and inclusion, and food security. I also serve on the Presidential Search Committee, the Tang Student Advisory Council, and I am an assistant co-host on Pass The Mic, a radio show that centers the voices of students with target identity on campus. My other interests include fashion, art, and writing poetry.

Student Voices

"I can never stress how important cultivating spaces where marginalized folk are listened to and respected is. There have been so many instances where I have felt silenced both academically and socially on campus. The spaces where I have experienced the most healing, radical truth-telling, and transformative learning were intentional in ensuring that marginalized voices are not only listened to but valued."
