Expectations for Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic

In the interest of protecting the health and safety of the Skidmore College community, the following expectations have been developed. These guidelines are consistent with state and federal guidelines, and follow the advice of leading health organizations.

All students shall comply with these guidelines. Reports of behavior that is inconsistent with these guidelines may be adjudicated through the student conduct process as alleged violations of the Failure to Comply policy, the Health and Safety policy, or other relevant items in the Code of Social Conduct. Please know that the list below is not an exhaustive list; the College will take seriously any reports of students participating in behaviors that jeopardize the health and safety of the Skidmore community.


  • Students may not host any non-Skidmore guests anywhere on campus property at any time.
  • Students residing in on-campus housing may not host any guests in their individual residential space for any period of time. This includes other Skidmore students who do not reside in the same residential space.
  • Students may not enter any residence hall or apartment building to which they are not assigned.
  • Students are expected to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance related to social distancing at all times.
  • Students are required to comply with all federal, state, and local guidance related to the pandemic.
  • Students are encouraged to limit their travel outside of Saratoga Springs, NY as much as possible. Students who must travel shall comply with all requirements of the New York State Travel Advisory, including all quarantine requirements.
  • Students are required to wear a mask covering the nose and mouth at all times (both on and off campus) when not in their personal living space. Students may remove masks for specific purposes including eating and vigorous exercise, when social distancing can be maintained.
  • Students shall comply with the advice and requests of all Health Services and County Health staff. This includes truthful participation in contact tracing conversations, and complying with directives related to a required period of isolation or quarantine.
  • Students are expected to schedule a COVID-19 test when required, and must show up to complete all testing procedures.
  • Students are expected to wash their hands regularly with soap and water, especially when entering a new space, room, or building on campus.
  • Gatherings of any size or prohibited in on-campus residences. The apartment party request process will be closed for the spring 2021 semester.
  • Students shall not engage in any behavior that poses a risk to the health or safety of themselves or others. The College will take seriously any violation of these expectations (i.e. intentional coughing or sneezing on another person, hosting large scale gatherings) and students may face significant student conduct outcomes if found responsible for violations.
  • Any student who tests positive for COVID-19 is expected to comply with all directives from Health Services, including participating in mandatory quarantine in order to reduce the risk to other members of the community. Any student who engages in contact with other community members while knowingly positive for COVID-19 will face significant student conduct outcomes, up to and including, removal from on-campus housing, suspension, and expulsion.
  • Students are expected to follow all cleaning protocols outlined by the College.
  • Students are expected to adhere to all posted information about pedestrian traffic patterns in campus buildings.
  • Students are expected to submit their symptom screen on the timeline outlined by the College.
  • Students are expected to adhere to academic seating and cleaning protocols.
  • Students may not host or participate in non-sanctioned, informal (not associated with a specific club, office, class, department, or campus organization) activities of more than 10 participants


The College takes seriously any failure to comply with the guidelines listed above. The Office of Residential Life will investigate and adjudicate any reported instances of failure to comply. Community members may report concerning behaviors through the Community Health Concerns Form.

Below you will find an outline of possible sanctions should a student be found responsible for failure to comply with the above guidelines.

Please note that due to the fluid nature of the available information about COVID-19, expectations may change through the semester. The College will keep students informed of changes by updating the website and notifying students via e-mail when substantial policy changes take effect.
