Application and Audition

The 2019 Application will be available shortly.

Please read this entire page for instructions on how to apply before continuing on to the online application.

Institute Dates: July 14–27, 2019 

Application Review and Deadline: Application review begins March 1. Requests for financial assistance in the form of scholarships are due March 1. If you wish to submit a late financial request for consideration, you may do so by following the instructions on this page, with the understanding that the review process may have already begun and we have a limited amount of financial assistance available. 

Applicants will be notified on their acceptance status on or before March 15, 2019.

Eligibility

Advanced young musicians, ages 15 and up, will be required to submit the items below. Pre-formed ensembles are eligible to apply as a group and should contact Coleen Stephenson at 518-580-5447 or cstephen@skidmore.edu for more specific instructions. 

  • A completed online application
  • A $60 application fee
  • Audition: Please prepare an audition recording following the instructions below or audition in person February 10, 2019 at Carnegie Hall Resnick Education Wing (requirements also listed below)
  • Essay question and answer: Please prepare an audition video of yourself answering the following questions, or be prepared to answer them in person at the live audition: Who inspires you musically and why? Describe your most memorable musical experience. What are your expectations for this program? How did you hear about DSCMI? Please be as specific as possible.
  • A one-page document of your past chamber music experience (including repertoire studied and performed)
  • Letter of recommendation from a teacher: Please provide us with your teacher’s name and email address for the online audition. We will contact them directly with a link so they may submit your letter of recommendation online. If you are auditioning in person, be prepared to bring a letter of recommendation from a teacher with you, or have it sent directly to Coleen Stephenson at the Office of the Dean of Special Programs, Skidmore College, 815 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Fellowship Applicants

In addition to the above-listed items, Fellowship applicants will be asked to submit:

  • A Letter of Recommendation.  Please ask a teacher or mentor that is familiar with your work as a collaborator and/or in community engagement. You will be asked to upload this letter with your audition.
  • A statement of intent (500 words max):  Please write a statement explaining why you would be an ideal Fellow for DSCMI. The letter should outline relevant performance, teaching, or community engagement experience and discuss why your experience at DSCMI would be important in helping you towards future career goals. 

Audition Requirements

Recordings submitted online

  • Video strongly preferred, audio accepted
  • Fellowship applicants are strongly encouraged to audition live. If that is not possible, please have submit a live, unedited performance with accompaniment (when applicable) from within the last two years. Whenever possible, record in the best acoustic with high-level audio/video equipment.
  • Recordings should be unedited and cued to proper starting point
  • Please label your file attachments with your full name and item description

For individuals:
Please prepare two movements from contrasting pieces. 

The first piece should be a movement from a standard concerto or sonata. A sonata should be performed with piano accompaniment.

The second piece may be a movement from an unaccompanied work, a show piece, or a movement of solo Bach. 

For pre-formed ensembles:
Please prepare two movements from contrasting pieces. 

Members of the ensemble that also wish to be considered as individuals should submit a movement from a standard concerto or sonata. 

Live Auditions

Applicants in or around the NYC area are encouraged to audition live.

Live auditions will be held February 10, 2019, at Carnegie Hall’s Resnick Education Wing, 154 W 57th Street, New York, N.Y. Applicants will be sent more information upon receipt of their application but should prepare the following pieces. 

For individuals:

  • Follow the same guidelines as the recorded auditions. 
  • Piano accompaniment is not required, however for applicants performing a sonata, please bring your own pianist. 

For pre-formed ensembles: 

  • Please prepare two movements from contrasting pieces. 
  • Members of the ensemble who also wish to be considered as individuals should prepare a movement from a standard concerto or sonata.

International Students
In accordance with U.S. Federal regulations, all non-U.S. Citizens must have a student visa to study in the United States. You may not attend Skidmore on a tourist visa. If you are an international student applying to the summer program, please view International Student Visa Info
