Scholarship Dinner Student Speakers

Five students shared their words of gratitude with their donors and other guests.

Jan Garcia '15, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Major: neuroscience
E. Davis Scholarship recipient

Jan Garcia '15"It is truly an honor to be a recipient of the E. Davis scholarship. Your generosity has allowed me to succeed in my academics while contributing to the Skidmore community. Thanks to this generous aid, I am on my way to accomplishing my dreams. I will become a first-generation college graduate, and after graduation I plan to attend a post-baccalaureate program to complete my pre-medicine requirements. Then I intend to apply to M.D./ Ph.D. programs in the hopes of helping communities through innovative research and patient care as a physician-scientist."

Emily Kortright '15, Phoenix, N.Y.
Major: sociology
Dodd O'Meara Scholarship recipient

Emily Kortright '15"Looking back on all that I have experienced and accomplished in my four years here, I can easily say that none of it would have been possible without this scholarship. My decision to attend Skidmore was influenced greatly by the widespread generosity I encountered, but your donation was my introduction to it. Without your help, my parents wouldn't have been able to send their daughters to private schools at the same time, and I would not have been able to present research that I have invested so much time and effort in."

Israel Da Silva '15, New York, N.Y.
Major: biochemistry
Fowler Scholarship and Nortman Scholarship recipient

Israel Da Silva '15

"As the first person going to college in my family, the support provided by the Skidmore community has allowed me to pursue my dream, and for that I'm very thankful! It's sad that my time at Skidmore is ending, but thanks to all the support provided by my donors, I feel ready to pursue my career in biochemistry. In fact, I'm looking at laboratory positions right now, and I feel very ready to move into a career in my field due to all the knowledge and experiences I acquired at Skidmore."

Matt Barra '15, Rochester, N.Y.
Major: biology
Fred L. Emerson Foundation Scholarship, Arkell-Hall Scholarship and Nancy A. Brennan '72 Skidmore Fund Scholarship recipient

Matt Barra '15

"I would like to congratulate all of the other students here for their outstanding work and personally thank all of the donors who made such generous contributions. Your generosity has provided me with the opportunity to attend such an incredible college where I have grown tremendously as a student, an athlete and as a person. Now that my time here at Skidmore is coming to an end, I realize how fortunate I am to receive these donations that have enabled me to work toward my goal of becoming a physician. I am forever thankful to Skidmore and my donors."

Rebecca Morofsky '15, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Majors: anthropology and religious studies
Claire M. Olds Scholarship recipient

Rebecca Morofsky '15"I want to thank all of the donors from the bottom of my heart. Your generosity has helped me pursue my academic dreams at Skidmore. In the summer before my senior year, I received a SEE-Beyond award to conduct anthropological fieldwork at the Ecumenical Community of Taizé, a pilgrimage site located in central-east France. Your ongoing support of Skidmore makes it possible for students to not only achieve academic excellence, but also to graduate and make significant contributions to social justice movements, cultural preservation, medicine, the arts and everything else that requires a vision."
