This paper examines Amazon’s impact on America’s retail landscape, economy, and society. A critical discourse analysis reveals two common views of Amazon in contemporary discourses: as a disruptive monopoly and as a disruptive modernizer. I evaluate the roles of libertarianism and neoliberalism in shaping these discourses, as well as make predictions for what the future of retail holds. Liv Fidler ‘19, “Her Body a Spectacle: Comediennes, Self-Deprecation, and Body Politics” Through case studies of two contemporary comediennes–Margaret Cho and Amy Schumer–I discuss the notion of spectacle and self-deprecatory humor around the “undesirable” female body. This paper employs critical discourse analysis, ethnography, and reception analysis to understand the transgressive and regressive role of comedic self-deprecation performed by women. I argue that the comedic style and content of their comedy is symptomatic of American beauty standards and gendered expectations that in turn reflect the experiences of many women. 4.
