Emily interned at two major organizations in Saratoga this past summer. At the City of Saratoga Springs Planning and Economic Development, she worked as an administrative and geographic mapping intern. She created and organized an electronic archive for past and present city development plans, and also helped write and submit two grants—one for the construction of the Geyser Road Trail, and one for the revision of the City's Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances, both of which will benefit the sustainable development of Saratoga Springs. As an intern for the

Complete Streets Board, she compiled geographic data using GIS for a proposed linkage study through the Capital District Transportation Committee. The end goal is to create and implement a plan to make the streets of Saratoga Springs safe for all pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

Caitlin White, ‘14, ESC Major, funded by RCIA

Over the summer, Caitlin worked with Sustainable Skidmore on updating Skidmore's Greenhouse Gas Inventory and creating a Sustainability Walking Tour brochure for the Admissions Office. Both of these tasks are extremely important to Skidmore's visibility as a college. With more and more prospective students interested in environmental issues and sustainability, Skidmore can now show off its progress in these areas because of Caitlin’s work. The Walking Tour brochures are available at the front desk in the Admissions office and are included in prospective students’ information packets.

Rebecca Fennel, ‘15, ESC Major, funded by RCIA This summer, Rebecca worked at Groundwork Somerville, an organization devoted to reviving the natural environment of Somerville (a city just outside Boston) by collaborating with the community on local sustainability projects. She led the Garden Youth Crew, a group of 13 middle school students passionate about growing food alongside their schools, and organized lesson plans that focused on urban agriculture, climate change, and value-added product marketing. She encouraged the students to taste vegetables and herbs that they had never tried before, and took them on trips to sustainable organizations in their community. Rebecca also worked at farmers market stands, selling the food that she and her students grew to Somerville residents at affordable prices.
