Lauren Bosche '15, Geoscience Major, East Bay Bicycle Coalition

A large part of Lauren’s summer was spent happily cycling her way to work at the East Bay Bicycle Coalition in Berkley, CA—she traveled over 402 miles en route to work! When not cruising on her bike, Lauren partici- pated in the Measure B1 campaign that lobbied for the reauthorization of a current half-cent transportation tax. The additional funds provided by this tax would be used to further bike and pedestrian projects, building over 500 miles of new bikeways and completing the city bicycle networks in Alameda County, CA. Through her advocacy for two-wheeled transport, Lauren learned not only about the pleasures of biking, but also saw how biking is good

for outreach, advocacy, personal health, and environmental improvement.

Charlotte Levy ’14, Biology Major, Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory

Charlotte worked at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory this past summer. She learned new, more complex methods of statistical analysis to help with her work synthesizing 20 years worth of data that UC Berkeley Professor John Harte has collected regarding the environmental impact of artificially heating plots of the environment compared to control plots. She and Professor Harte are currently writing up their results for publication. Charlotte had a great experience and believes it will steer her towards similar work in grad school.

Eliza Sherpa ’14, ES Major, Shaleshock Alliance

Eliza interned this summer with the organization Shaleshock Alliance in the Tompkins County, NY region, an outreach and information hub about hydrofracking in the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region. She took part in a number of projects working to stop this form of natural gas extraction in the region. Eliza gained experi- ence in grassroots organizing, outreach and education, and nonviolent direct action that she brought with her to Lincoln County, WV later that summer, where she and 19 others were arrested for trespassing during a peaceful

demonstration against mountaintop removal at the Hobet strip mine. The power of grassroots organizing, direct action, and the profound solidarity that she felt even while in jail has “strengthened [her] resolve to continue this work both personally and intellectually.”

Kate Taylor ’14, ES Major, Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary

Kate spent her summer interning as a zookeeper at the Austin Zoo in Austin, TX. She helped the zookeepers with the day-to-day operations of the zoo including feeding, medical care, habitat design, and education. She worked in an immensely different environment than what she was used to before beginning the intern- ship and had to adapt very quickly to the intense heat and cultural differences of Texas. One of the greatest challenges Kate faced was keeping her thermally- sensitive animals happy and healthy in over-100F weather.
