On-Campus Fire Drills

Each Semester the Department of Campus Safety and the Office of Residential Life, in con-junction with the Saratoga Springs Fire Department, conduct fire drills in every residential facility (a minimum of three each year per residential facility). In addition, fire drills are conducted for various programs that reside on campus during the summer.

Fire Safety Education for students and staff

Each summer, Residential Life staff members receive training in fire prevention and response from the Saratoga Springs Fire Department, NewYork State Office of Fire Prevention and Con-trol, and the Department of Campus Safety. In addition, there is a mandatory fire and safety orientation for all residential students every fall semester. This training is conducted by Cam-pus Safety, Saratoga Springs Police Department, and the Saratoga Springs Fire Department. Employees receive education regarding fire safety as part of the hiring process.

Fire Safety Policy

Building evacuation is required when a fire alarm sounds, unless previous notice was 1

provided by a College official indicating that the alarm will be tested and evacuation is not necessary.

Damage, misuse, or theft of fire alarm systems and firefighting equipment is prohibited 2

and in violation of the law.

Students are prohibited from covering or attaching anything to fire safety equipment in 3

their residence, including sprinklers, smoke detectors, heat detectors, etc.

The City of Saratoga Springs may assign fines for false (negligent) fire alarms per City or- 4

dinance. Students may be responsible for the cost of the fine if it resulted from negligent fire safety.

In compliance with New York State law, smoking inside of all buildings and residences 5

on campus is prohibited.

Food preparation is permitted in residence hall kitchenettes and apartment kitchens 6

only. The cooking of food and the use of electrical appliances (toaster ovens, microwave ovens, heating coils, George Foreman grills, etc.) are prohibited in student rooms.

Wall decor in all residence hall or apartment spaces must not cover more than 10% of 7

each individual wall. Tapestries are permitted only if flame retardant and meet the pre-ceding size requirements. Decor cannot attach to ceilings or connect one wall to an-other. Only two strings of lighting can be connected together as one. Tapestries may not cover doorway or entryways.

All door and windows to College residences must remain unblocked to provide clear 8

egress in case of emergency. Clear egress must be present in all rooms. Student may not partition rooms.
