Protein

Protein is vital for growth and repair in the human body. Muscles, bones, blood, and fingernails are all built on the basic framework that protein provides. Protein also keeps our eyesight healthy, helps to build antibodies, enzymes, hormones, and other important compounds. Protein provides 4 calories per gram and is made of amino acids (our body can make 11 amino acids but there are 9 essential amino acids we need to get from the foods that we eat).
Protein comes from both animal and plant sources but while animal proteins are considered complete proteins, plant proteins have to be paired up (like beans and rice) to make a complete protein that our body can use.

Food sources of protein include:

  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Beans
  • Nuts
  • Cheese
  • Tofu
  • Vegetables
  • Some fruits
  • Pastas
  • Breads
  • Rice
