  • M.S., Statistics, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA (2010)

Professor Lopez teaches statistics courses for the department. He completed the requirements for a Ph.D. from Brown University during the summer of 2014, and he will officially receive his degree in May of 2015. Professor Lopez’s research area lies in deriving causes and effects using observational data. For example, does reading the nutritional labels on food items lead to healthier outcomes? Or are people who are healthier simply read nutritional labels more often? He has twice presented on methods for causal inference with multiple treatments at the Joint Statistical Meetings, both in Montreal (2013) and Boston (2014). Professor Lopez is also interested in statistical methods for analyzing sports data, and has published multiple papers on both hockey and football. In his spare time, he keeps an active blog, and has also written for Sports Illustrated, The Hockey News, and Deadspin.
