Thomas Johnson teaches courses in music theory and musicology, having previously worked at Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn College, and the University of Washington. His current research focuses on streaming services and musical genre. He is particularly interested in how our musical experiences are mediated by (and in turn mediate) technologies like Spotify or Apple music. Thomas has published on the role of tonality in early-20th-century modernist practices and on some recent literature on popular music genres, and has presented on topics like mashups, Stockhausen, and Chance the Rapper at various national and international conferences. He received his B.A. (Physics) from Colorado College, his M.A. (Music Theory) from the University of Washington, and his Ph.D. (Music Theory) from The Graduate Center CUNY.
