Safety Training

The purpose of safety training is to provide the knowledge necessary to perform a job safely by establishing expectations for employees on how to perform job tasks. Safety training helps broaden employee knowledge on the recognition, avoidance, and prevention of safety and health hazards in their workplaces. The Occupational Health & Safety Department offers training on a variety of safety topics.

Many OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations have training requirements.

The Hazard Communication Standard mandates that employees who may be exposed to chemicals or chemical products as part of their work receive training on the safe handling of chemicals. Therefore, workers in the trade shops and machine shops, custodians, and anyone who works with chemical products must attend a Hazard Communication training program.

The OSHA Laboratory Standard requires that all laboratory employees who may be exposed to chemicals receive training - please contact the Environmental Health and Safety website for more information.

Employees who may be exposed to human blood or other potentially infectious materials are required by the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to receive training on this standard.

Any employee who may be exposed to specific hazards, including, high noise levels, confined spaces, conduct maintenance or servicing on machinery, etc. are required to attend specific training courses. 

All new full-time, part-time, temporary and student workers within the departments of Facilities Services, Dining Services, Post Office or Stables must recieve a New Employee Safety Orientation Training before regualr work may be performed. New Employee Safety Orientation Training is provided when:

• an employee first begins work
• an employee is given a new assignment for which training has not previously been provided
• new hazards are introduced into the workplace by new substances, processes or equipment
• a supervisor is made aware of a new or previously unrecognized hazard
