Title IX Regulations Update

May 20, 2020

Dear Members of the Skidmore Community,

On May 6, 2020, the Department of Education announced new Title IX regulations, with which all colleges and universities in the United States must comply, effective August 14, 2020. This requirement comes after the Department proposed these regulations for public review on November 16, 2018. Skidmore responded to this posting in two formal letters: one as a member of the New York Six Consortium and another as one of 24 private, liberal arts colleges and universities.

Skidmore College remains strongly committed to its efforts to combat sexual and gender-based misconduct, support victims and survivors of these acts, and protect our community through a fair and unbiased hearing process. Skidmore College prohibits all forms of sexual and gender-based discrimination, including sexual assault, sexual harassment, intimate-partner violence, and stalking.

The President’s Cabinet and the Student Affairs Title IX Working Group, led by Vice President Cerri Banks, have been closely monitoring this situation and evaluating the effects these regulations will have on our community. With a few new members added since the release of the regulations, members of the working group are the following:

  • Cerri Banks, Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Affairs (chair)
  • Joel Aure, Title IX Coordinator
  • Gabriela Melillo, Title IX Deputy Coordinator for Student Affairs
  • Janet Casey, Associate Dean of the Faculty for Diversity and Faculty Affairs
  • Dwayne G. Zuhlke, Associate Director – HR Liaison
  • Emma Porter (student), Chair of It’s Happening Here Commission
  • Sonia Kramer (student), Member of It’s Happening Here Commission
  • William Christmann (student), Peer Health Educator and Member of the PHE Sexual Health Committee
  • Ann Marie Przywara, Associate Dean of Student Affairs for Residential Life and Student Conduct
  • Julia Routbort, Associate Dean of Student Affairs for Health and Wellness
  • Katie Wright, Associate Director of Residential Life for Student Conduct
  • Lorri Riggs, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs for Student Success
  • Lynore DiMenna, Senior Administrative Assistant in Student Affairs (administrative support)
  • Sarah Delaney Vero, Esq., Human Resources Consultant and Attorney at Delaney Vero, PLLC

As this group works to finalize recommendations and meet the August 14 deadline, it will consult widely with faculty and staff about the implications of these new regulations. There will be opportunities for community members to ask questions and provide comments and feedback. In the weeks and months to come, regular updates to the community will be provided, as we explore next steps and consider adjustments to our Title IX policies and procedures. In the meantime, any Skidmore College student, faculty, staff, or community member may provide comments or feedback about these new regulations by contacting the Title IX Coordinator Joel Aure at jaure@skidmore.edu.

Those seeking resources and information about the current policies and procedures are encouraged to visit the College’s Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Resources and Information page.

Thank you for your attention and engagement.

Sincerely,
Philip A. Glotzbach
President
