What can I support with a gift to the Skidmore Fund?
Unrestricted giving—where Skidmore needs it the most!
The Skidmore Fund turns individual gifts of all sizes into support for the key aspects of a Skidmore education. We put every dollar to immediate use for areas of greatest need. Unrestricted gifts help ensure that Skidmore is:
- financially accessible to a highly qualified and diverse student body,
- able to recruit and retain the exceptional faculty who are the cornerstone of a Skidmore education,
- supporting high-impact educational activities like collaborative research, study abroad and internships and
- providing and maintaining the best facilities possible for academics, the arts and athletics.
Other gifts to the Skidmore Fund
Is there a particular aspect of Skidmore you would like to support? You can by designate your gift to one of the following ongoing priorities.
More than 40 percent of students attending Skidmore receive financial aid. With an average award grant of $35,600, Skidmore ranks among the best schools in the nation in the size of need-based financial aid awarded. In fact, in the last 10 years, Skidmore has more than doubled its commitment to financial aid, from $16.2 million to more than $42 million. Scholarship gifts to the Skidmore Fund continue to make a Skidmore education accessible to students who have the talent and commitment to join our community.
Student/faculty collaboration is one of the hallmarks of a Skidmore education. For generations, exceptional faculty members in all disciplines have taught Skidmore students. A gift to the Skidmore Fund Faculty Support helps provide the resources to attract and retain first-rate professors and creates opportunities for their own scholarship and research. Skidmore’s faculty numbers 260, 88 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their disciplines. Our student faculty ratio is 9:1.
One of the keys to a great education at Skidmore is the availability of "high-impact" experiences like collaborative research with a faculty, internships and study-abroad programs. Last year nearly 100 students stayed on campus to do research with faculty members in various fields. This is a hands-on learning opportunity that provides a meaningful experience and can be beneficial as graduates pursue career or graduate school opportunities. A Skidmore Fund Academic Initiative gift supports these programs and other priorities across 50 possible majors.
Student participation in activities beyond the classroom helps to create a rich and dynamic community. A Student Life gift to the Skidmore Fund supports student clubs and organizations, athletics, volunteer programs and the performing arts—all enhancing the overall Skidmore experience and, in many cases, providing meaningful community support.
Skidmore’s student body is diverse and brings to campus a variety of multicultural perspectives: The Class of 2018 hails from 35 states, the District of Columbia and 27 countries. Additionally, 22 percent are self-identified students of color. Skidmore is committed to provide the student experience with perspective in the areas of multicultural understanding, social responsibility and informed citizenship through the curriculum, events and activities hosted on campus.
The Sustainable Skidmore Office promotes and advocates for sustainability at Skidmore College and highlights sustainable programs and practices on campus. The sustainability coordinator oversees these efforts, in conjunction with faculty, staff and students who help make sustainability a reality on campus. Donations to Sustainable Skidmore help to support initiatives.
Inaugurated in 1927 and brought back to life in 1998, the Saratoga Classic Horse Show is a highlight of the early summer season in Saratoga Springs. This top-level historic competition attracts many of the country's best horses and riders, and all proceeds benefit scholarships to Skidmore College students.
The Friends of Skidmore Athletics (FOSA) initiative promotes the ongoing improvement of the college's athletics program. Under the guidance of the athletic director, an enthusiastic committee of alumni, parents and friends are committed to enhancing the athletics experience at Skidmore for current student-athletes ensuring they can compete and succeed at the highest level. FOSA also provides the fundraising framework through which donors can support the overall athletics program, intramural sports activities, fitness and recreation programming and/or individual intercollegiate teams.
