ID 201H Fall 2003
ROLES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF
LS 1 TUTORS
LS 1
tutors are an important resource for LS 1. They bring to the course the insight
and enthusiasm of students who have already excelled in LS 1. As peers of this
year's first-year students, they serve as model learners. They also work to
enhance the intellectual atmosphere of the residence halls by fostering informal
discussions about LS 1 topics and by providing special co-curricular
programming related to LS 1. They are also available outside of normal classroom
hours to provide assistance to students.
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ALL TUTORS
- Attend every LS 1 lecture and
take notes.
- Attend every LS 1 discussion
seminar.
- Attend all LS 1 special events.
- Read LS 1 course materials and
take notes.
- Tutor in the evenings in the
residence hall LS 1 Tutoring Program.
- Participate fully and effectively
in all aspects of ID 201H.
RESPONSIBILITIES TO BE NEGOTIATED WITH DISCUSSION GROUP
INSTRUCTOR
- Regular meeting times between
the tutor and the LS 1 instructor.
- Form of participation of the
tutor in the LS 1 seminar: co-instructor, experienced learner,
another student in class, catalyst for discussion, class recorder, observer.
- Responsibilities of the tutor
for observing discussion group dynamics and reporting these
observations to the LS 1 instructor.
- Responsibilities of the tutor
for preparing questions or other activities for discussion groups.
- Opportunities for the tutor to
lead discussion sections, independently or in coordination with the instructor.
LS 1 TUTORS ARE NOT
- Teaching Assistants
They cannot grade student work nor should they be asked to assess students'
performances in the course.
- Student Assistants
They should not be asked to do clerical tasks, whether related to LS 1 or the
instructor's other courses.
- Substitute Teachers
Tutors should be invited to lead discussion sections only with preparation and
guidance from the instructor. However, it is inappropriate to ask tutors to
assume the responsibilities for a discussion section more than three times in
a semester or without sufficient notice and preparation. Should instructors
become ill or unavailable unexpectedly for any other reason, they should contact
Prof. Marx, who will arrange for another faculty member to take their place.
