Essay Grading Guide

 
Grade   Description: "The paper . . . "
A - demonstrates a novel and creative approach.
- has an extensive and carefully selected bibliography/discography.

B - fully meets the specified assignment, including a clear thesis and supporting bibliography.
- uses the MLA in-text parenthetical citation style throughout the paper. (See the Skidmore Guide to Writing)
- employs appropriate examples.
- approaches sources critically.
- exhibits correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary.
- presents a balanced approach to the subject.
- is clear, logical, and persuasive.
- is turned in on time. (I will dock late papers for each day they are overdue.)

C - has many of the above characteristics, but fails to realize them fully. (Such essays suggest that the writer needs to work through at least one more draft.)

D - has significant problems and/or numerous small problems. (Such essays suggest that the writer has worked quickly through a single draft.)

F - has substantial problems.
