2. The Spread of Consciousness: Panpsychism in Modern Western Philosophy
PALAMOUNTAIN 202
Faculty Sponsor: Larry Jorgensen, Philosophy
Presenters: Elaina Aquila ’16, Owen Lilly ’16
This year’s Senior Seminar in Philosophy studied the history of consciousness, looking in
particular at traditionally marginalized theories as fruitful avenues of research. We gave
special attention to Margaret Cavendish and Anne Conway, whose philosophical views
are broadly
panpsychist
: the view that mentality of some sort is basic to all of reality. We
traced this idea through to the recent resurgence of panpsychism among philosophers of
mind today.
3. Capstone Projects in Asian Studies
PALAMOUNTAIN 300
Faculty Sponsor: Masako Inamoto, Asian Studies
Presenters: Fawzi Ghandour ’16, Cindy Lan ’16
Graduating Asian Studies majors will be presenting their capstone research
papers. Cindy Lan will discuss how the instrumentation of Cultural Revolution model
operas was integral to their political impact. In his research paper, Fawzi Ghandour will
demonstrate how Oda Sakunosuke (1913-1947), a Japanese writer, constructs a sense of
place and time in his home city of Osaka as a method of realizing memories of the city
and its people.
