Skidmore College: Why It Matters - page 22-23

WHAT ROLE DO ALUMNI,
PARENTS, AND OTHERS PLAY?
•••
OUR ALUMNI AND OUR PARENTS ARE A MAJOR SOURCE OF
PRIDE AND AN INSPIRATION FOR THE FUTURE.
Our alumni validate
our educational philosophy and serve as exemplars of the excellence for which we strive.
Our parents are often our most ardent cheerleaders. They are able to see the transformative
power of a Skidmore education as they watch their sons and daughters blossom and grow
literally before their eyes. And then there are our many friends from Saratoga Springs who
have helped the College and the city flourish over the past quarter century. All three groups
are energized by the dynamism of today’s Skidmore. They’re proud of our commitment to
liberal education and to fostering a close-knit campus community—values that have long
shaped the Skidmore experience.
Because they are supportive of the direction we are taking, they have been there for the
College whenever we’ve needed them, not only giving financial support but also serving as
advisors to me, mentors to our students, and volunteers who pitch in across the entire spec-
trum of our academic community.
Just lookathow they responded toourCreativeThoughtBoldPromiseCampaign. When
we set the goal for that campaign at $200 million, we were all a bit daunted by the number.
The previous campaign had raised just over $86 million. But when we surpassed that ambi-
tious goal, ending at $216.5 million, it showed us how much our alumni, parents, and friends
value Skidmore. They have helped us more than double our endowment, from $155 million
in 2003 to $330 million today. It’s especially important to me to convey how grateful we are
for this extraordinary support. Quite simply, without the engagement of our alumni, parents,
andotheradvocates, theachievements Ihavebeen talkingaboutwouldhavebeen impossible.
Their continuing support is essential to moving us forward.
Quite simply, without the
engagement of our alumni,
parents, and other advocates,
the achievements I have been
talking about would
have been impossible.
