A message from the Center for Leadership, Teaching, and Learning

From Beck Krefting, Director of the Center for Leadership, Teaching, and Learning:

Leaves are changing colors, the nights are arriving earlier and earlier, and jackets are starting to work their way to the front of the closet. The fall semester is in full swing, and the Center for Leadership, Teaching, and Learning team has a diverse lineup of events for folks.

But first, let me introduce you to the students who will be working with the CLTL in the coming academic year. They will assist with programming, promotion, and web design/content, as well as launching a student-led initiative in the spring.

Fall Spotlight

Michael DeCarlen-Bumiller is a Class of 2023 Political Science major and member of the Periclean Honors Forum from Boxford, Massachusetts. He also serves as the Senior Alumni Board Student Representative and works in the Alumni Relations and College Events office. He is a passionate community servant who believes everyone can change the world starting with their intrapersonal interactions. His favorite classes are ones that foreground engaging discussions and have a good balance between professor and student participation/interaction. If you want to put a smile on his face serve him some Cajun food.

Lila Norton is a Class of 2024 geoscience major and anthropology minor from Western Massachusetts. Lila hopes that this experience will bring more opportunities to apply intersectionality on campus and to increase student involvement within the CLTL. Her favorite classes are ones that focus on minoritized identities in STEM and broach challenging topics in a safe space. During her down time, you can find her playing the cello, participating in ultimate frisbee, or hitting the ski slopes when the weather allows.

Cheyenne Tanner-Cotman (Class of 2024) is a junior at Skidmore who hails from Delaware. She is a computer science major with plans to become a software designer. She is a hard worker (who also holds a job off-campus at Starbucks) and a passionate lover of all forms of art. She is excited to be a part of the CLTL team and advocate for those like her who are always looking for improvements in the classroom. Her favorite classes are ones that are hands-on and offer direct and detailed guidance in exploring course topics. She lives with two guinea pigs named Oreo and Cookie Dough.

Accessibility Considerations for Teaching and Learning with Aaron Kendall and Meg Hegener

• Date: Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Weller Room (#212) of Scribner Library
• Description: Join LEDS and Student Academic Services for a discussion about classroom accommodations and accessibility in the classroom. 

Bridge Experience (BE) Brown Bag Lunch Series with BE and Civic Engagement Director Eric Morser

• Date: Friday, Oct. 14, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Weller Room (#212) of Scribner Library
• Description: This is the second in the lunch series devoted to discussion of delivering Bridge Experience courses — past, present, or future. 

NY6 Presents: Policies and Practices to Support Gender Diverse Students, Faculty, and Staff  

• Date: October 21, 2022 from 1:30-3:00 PM (Zoom; registration required)
• Description: Jamie MaKinster, Ph.D., and Becca Barile, Ed.D., (see bios on the CLTL webpage) will discuss how increasing numbers of students, faculty, and staff self-identify as transgender, gender non-binary, and/or gender diverse.

Participants must register for this workshop: After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

What the F*@# Just Happened?: Confronting Challenges in the Classroom

• Date: Friday, Oct. 21, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Emerson Auditorium
• Description: Come socialize with members of the new faculty learning community and meet with veteran faculty members who will discuss how they have coped with various challenges arising in the classroom.

Fall Book Club: Inclusive Teaching: Strategies for Promoting Equity in the Classroom (West Virginia UP, 2022)

• Date: Friday, Oct. 28, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Weller Room (#212) of Scribner Library
• Description: This recently published book by biology Professor Kelly Hogan and mathematics Professor Viji Sathy offers cross-disciplinary practical strategies for enhancing student learning for students of all abilities.
