Because the first semester of college is a major transition. Happily, there’s a community of people offering a personalized introduction to the boundless opportunities that await first-year students at Skidmore.

Meet our Summer Advising Program and learn how connecting with a faculty friend before you arrive can make all the difference.

Laila Morgan, Skidmore College Class of 2018, shares her experience working at the Tang Teaching Museum as the 2016-17 Carole Marchand '57 Endowed Intern. Laila, a trained birth doula, discusses her exhibition "Birthing Bodies" and the related public programming. The exhibition explored childbirth through a feminist lens, examining ideas of autonomy, power, and liminality.

Campus Notes

Amy Frappier, associate professor and chair of geosciences, was quoted in a July 4 article in The Washington Post titled, “Young Thai soccer players trapped in flooded cave are in good shape, but getting them out will be a challenge.”

Frappier also was interviewed on Friday, July 7 by New Zealand’s RadioLIVE news program and on Sunday, July 8 by Al Jazeera TV Network, describing the difficult underground cave rescue in Thailand.

Chris Mann, assistant professor of political science, was interviewed for a July 8 story titled, “Why People Are Talking About Gov. Ivey’s Age,” which aired on WBHM, the NPR station in Birmingham, Alabama. Mann discussed people’s impressions of candidates, saying the media and voters are more critical of female candidates like Ivey. “We judge people using things that are, in some ways, in the lizard brain based on voice pitch, or appearance, age and gender,” he said.

Daniel Nathan, professor of American studies, was interviewed by alumna Anna Piperato ’01, while on a recent research trip to Siena, Italy. The segment, "Prof. Daniel Nathan from Skidmore College talks about the relationship between sport and culture at Cantina del Brunello," aired on the #PalioLive Facebook page and the Place2Be Siena travel and culture website. Nathan discussed the parallels between the American sports of baseball and football and Siena, Italy’s famed Palio di Siena horse race.

Ian Berry, director of the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, was interviewed on WAMC’s "The RoundTable" on July 9 to discuss the fifth annual Frances Day at the Tang. Berry also shared information about the summer happenings at Skidmore, as well the Tang’s new exhibit, “Give a damn.”

Catherine J. Golden, professor of English and the Tisch Chair in Arts and Letters, has published “Irony and Sensitivity: Hugh Thomson’s Pride and Prejudice.” Illustration 55 (Spring 2018): 32-37.
