The Dreyfus Affair bore as a key part of its legacy  a new chapter in the development of the modern mass-media. To be sure, the images on these pages attest to the vitality of the illustrated press, in the days preceding electronic broadcasting. More important still, the “recycling” feature of the images you see here points to the inescapable fact that in the Affair the media became very much a part of the story it attempted to tell. Each side would “lift” images from the opposition as a way of co-opting its rival’s strategies for asserting the truth.
