Help inform Skidmore’s next mission statement 

‌The College is undertaking a review of its mission statement. You are invited to review the current statement and share feedback through a brief survey. For more information, refer to the email from the Office of the President sent Wednesday, April 22. A workshop discussion will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, in Wyckoff Center. ‌FYE summer reading for Class of 2030 announced

‌The First-Year Experience has selected “Who Is Government? The Untold Story of Public Service,” edited by Michael Lewis, as the summer reading for the Class of 2030. Incoming students, peer mentors, and Scribner Seminar faculty will receive copies. Geraldine Brooks, author of the included essay “The Cyber Sleuth,” and the subject of her essay, Jarod Koopman, will visit campus Monday, Sept. 28, for a keynote event.

‌Skidmore Theater presents “The Trees”

‌Skidmore Theater will present “The Trees” by Agnes Borinsky, directed by Sara Lyons, April 17–25 in the Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theater Mainstage. The play follows two siblings who return to their childhood home and mysteriously find themselves rooted to the earth, exploring themes of responsibility to land and community. Tickets are available online.

Prisons and libraries zine drop event 

A zine drop event will be held from 12:20 to 1:40 p.m. Friday, April 24, in Wyckoff Center. The event marks the culmination of a yearlong Project Pericles Civic Story Lab fellowship, with special guests from the Parole Preparation Project. The official zine debut and remarks will begin at 1 p.m. Pizza and refreshments will be provided. Contact Marta Brunner with questions.

‌Facilities update 

‌Facilities Services has begun starting up the campus chilled water system, which provides air conditioning for select buildings, in preparation for warmer spring temperatures. The system is expected to be operational by the first week of May. Buildings affected by this startup include Bolton Hall, Palamountain Hall, Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences, Barrett Center, Howe-Rounds Hall, Wait Hall, Jonsson Tower (one section), Case Center, Ladd Hall, Lucy Scribner Library, and Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theater.

‌‌‌FYE award winners announced 

‌The winners of the 2025–26 Candace Carlucci Backus ’66 First-Year Experience Prize have been announced. Julian Hoàng received the award for the creative project “No Longer Human, No Longer Tragic: Despair Remodeled into Ironic Detachment,” with accompanying original artwork, nominated by Masako Inamoto; Madeline Mechanic for the literary memoir “Khatchkar,” nominated by Melora Wolff; and Ben Rosan for the essay and original song “Sounds Like Chaos,” nominated by Rachel Roe-Dale. Additional nominees included Luke Splendido, Rebecca Perl, Julia Nguyen, Maisie Shuffelton-Sobe, Finnean Sieks, Virginia Kyle, Jazzy Matthews, Ada VanDyke, and Audrey Williams.

‌OCSE photo contest voting 

‌More than 300 photos were submitted to the annual OCSE photo contest, and the campus community is invited to vote for the winners. Voting will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, on Case Walkway, where finalists will be on display. Voting is open to students, faculty, and staff. Online voting is also available.

‌Advanced GIS presentations 

‌Advanced GIS Presentations will be held from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, in GIS Center, Scribner Library 227. Learn about projects completed by students in ID 351, who partnered with external organizations to build spatial modeling, cartographic, and analytical skills through real-world work. Snacks will be provided.

‌Community engagement project presentations 

‌Students in ES 224 Political Ecology will present findings from their academic civic engagement work with Pitney Meadows Community Farm and the Saratoga Center for the Family from 12:20 to 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in the Surrey-Williamson Inn. The multiyear project addresses food and nutritional security among residents of low- and subsidized-housing units in Saratoga Springs, Ballston Spa, and Corinth.
