Alumni Profiles
Angel Perez 98
I was a poor kid from the South Bronx, and Skidmore opened my eyes to a
whole new world, says social work major Angel Perez, a major force in
helping his alma mater work toward achieving a diverse campus
environment.
A former assistant director in Skidmores admissions office and now the
Alumni Associations chair of diversity, Angel is director of
secondary-school relations for Pace Universitys Center for Urban
Education. As director of Paces Upward Bound Program before that, he
steered economically and educationally disadvantaged students to
Skidmore. I have a freshman there this year, he says. She cant stop
e-mailing me to tell me its the best decision shes ever made.
Peter Wan 95
Peter Wan first laid eyes on Skidmores campus when, as a high-school
senior, he played piano in the Filene Music Competion and won a
four-year scholarship. I enjoyed the environment and even chatted with
the president, he recalls of that visit. I realized then that Skidmore
was a place where I could get personal attention. It was also a place
where I could pursue multiple interests. Careerwise, it was a summer
internship on Wall Street that led to his first job as an equity trader.
A decade later, the biology and music double major is a vice president
at Auufhauser Securities Inc. Peter is currently a young alumni trustee
at Skidmore.
Juleyka Lantigua '96
A double major in government and Spanish and president of a Latino/a
student organization, Juleyka received a Fulbright Scholarship after
Skidmore, enabling her to conduct research in Madrid. After earning a
masters in journalism, she became managing editor for Urban Latino
magazine. Shes now managing editor of Honey magazine, a national
entertainment, beauty, and fashion monthly geared toward
African-American women.
Says Juleyka, My relationship with Skidmore is like any relationshipwe
support, challenge, and nurture each other even when we are at oddsas
we both grow and learn.
Ayanna Singleton 01
"I loved it," recalls Ayanna of her first visit to Skidmore. "I felt a
great vibe from the school. The students were sincere, and I could tell
that my relationships with faculty would be personal. As someone who
came from a high school with a 40:1 student/teacher ratio, that was
critical."
Ayanna, a psychology-sociology major, found Skidmore challenging in a
social sense. But, she says, it forced me to step out of my circle
and develop relationships with people of different backgrounds and
experiences. I appreciate the lessons I learned at Skidmore about
valuing differences and broadening my perspectives."
Ayanna works as a recruiter for J.P. Morgan Chase, working with
educational institutions. Down the road, shed like to run a business
providing professional development skills and strategies.
Rosalynn Chun 02
From small town Ohio to London, England, to the Big Applestitched
together by Skidmore. Thats one way of thinking about Rosalynn Chun
02, who majored in history and minored in sociology and government. She
also made great friends in college. But it was her semester in
Skidmores London program that truly stood out because it was her own
experienceher decision, her trip, her way.
Her relationship with Skidmore professors also stood out. Says Rosalynn,
Whenever I needed letters of recommendation, there were so many
professors I could turn to because they knew me as both a student and a
person.
Rosalynn recently landed a job with A & E Television Networks in New
York City. She hopes to explore the production side of television in
media communications. Its an interest she developed at Skidmore.
