Student Profiles

Name: Eduardo Zevallos ’04

Hometown: Jackson, New Jersey

Major: Classics

Activities: member, Ujima; member, Raíces; Admissions tour guide

Quote: “I came to Skidmore because of its 3+2 engineering program with Dartmouth. Then I took a class called Greek Tragedy, which sparked my interest in the classics. I realized this was my true passion.”

Ambition: “To live in Italy for a year, and afterward pursue a graduate degree in Europe. Eventually, I’d like to teach humanities, perhaps at an international school abroad.”

Name: Tony Lu ’05

Hometown: Newton, Massachusetts

Major: Economics, with a minor in International Affairs

Activities: Varsity crew; senator, Student Government Association; student rep, Economics Department; board member, Asian Cultural Awareness; Admissions tour guide

Quote: “Skidmore is a tight community where people with diverse interests are able to interact through classes, campus events, even residential living. In my house, we have five different majors represented: economics, computer science, Asian studies, biochemistry, and business.”

Ambition: “I’ve developed a fascination with the law and its interpretation. Law school is my next step. But I’m not sure whether I’ll go corporate or pursue public service.”

Name: Maraki Dagnachew ’05

Hometown: New York, New York

Major: Social Work and Computer Science

Activities: member, Ujima; Skidmore Student Credit Union; math tutor; Liberal Studies 1 tutor; research assistant, Department of Social Work

Quote: “Academics at Skidmore are exceptional because of the small classes and willing professors. Some professors even give me their home phone numbers. That’s the good part —that one-on-one attention.”

Ambition: “Attend grad school in social work or psychology, and hopefully work in a penal institution system.”

Name: Ibardo Zambrano ’06

Hometown: Medellin, Colombia

Major: Neuroscience and Chemistry

Activities: varsity tennis; counselor, Higher Education Opportunity Program; participant, faculty-student collaborative research

Quote: “If you want to work and achieve something, you can really do it in the U.S. The same is true of Skidmore. What’s most important here is getting an education that allows you to go out and do something meaningful in the world.”

Ambition: “After completing my N.I.H. internship, I want to earn an M.D./Ph.D. and advance the knowledge of neurodegenerative diseases.”

Name: Jermaine Gonsalves ’04

Hometown: New York, New York

Major: Management and Business

Activities: Ad-Liberal Artists; Admissions tour guide; member, Ujima; intramurals (softball, basketball, football)

Quote: “Skidmore is the right place for me because it’s close to home, it’s not too big, and there is a good balance of academics and social life. I’m never lacking for things to do.”

Ambition: “Work in marketing, sales, or public relations. It’ll give me an opportunity to put my communications skills to use.”

Name: Craig Hyland ’05

Hometown: Canandaigua, New York Major: Social Work

Activities: president, Skidmore Pride Alliance; social chair, Class of 2005 Council; Webmaster and scorekeeper, for the varsity baseball team; board member, Center for Safer Sexual Relations

Quote: “Skidmore is a small liberal arts school with a big-college culture. There are so many events—Latino events, comedy shows, tons of music. Coming to Skidmore I didn’t expect that, but there’s always something going on, no matter what your taste is.”

Ambition: “Work for a macro-level social work agency such as the Human Rights Campaign.”

Name: Eva Christensen ’04

Hometown: Hong Kong, China Major: Elementary Education

Activities: captain, women’s swim team; volunteer, International Student Union; intramural soccer; Volunteer, Special Olympics

Quote: “The best thing for me was joining the swim team. When I first arrived at Skidmore, I didn’t like it. I was in culture shock. But when I joined the swim team I lost that feeling of being different. I felt connected.”

Ambition: “Return to Hong Kong and teach in a lower primary school, probably at an international school.”
