Research is a key part of biology at Skidmore — it’s how we deepen our understanding of the living world and prepare students for future study or careers in science. Many students collaborate closely with faculty on original research projects, often leading to conference presentations or co-authored publications.

Interested in joining a lab? Here's how to get started:

• Explore your interests. Skidmore biology faculty conduct research in areas like cell and molecular biology, ecology, immunology, and plant science. Browse faculty bios to learn more about research interests.
• Talk to faculty. Once you've identified a focus area, connect with potential research mentors to ask about current projects and expectations.
• Plan your time. Research is a significant commitment — much like athletics or performance. Make sure your schedule allows time for lab work, fieldwork, or independent study.
• Start early. To register for a credit-bearing research course, you’ll need faculty approval and should begin planning several weeks before pre-registration.

SEE-Beyond Awards offer $6,000 to support biology students pursuing summer research, internships, or creative projects that connect classroom learning with real-world goals.

Past biology-related experiences have included:

• Field or lab-based research, either independently or at a host institution
• Internships in biotech, conservation, health, or sustainability
• Workshops, residencies, or interdisciplinary experiences related to biology or science communication

Biology students at Skidmore can apply for the Summer Experience Fund (SEF) and receive up to $4,500 to help cover unpaid or low-paid summer opportunities that build on classroom learning. Whether you're working in a research lab, completing a public health internship, or conducting independent fieldwork, SEF can help make it possible.

The fund supports a wide range of biology-related experiences, including:

• Faculty-mentored research (on or off campus)
• Internships with labs, conservation groups, hospitals, or science nonprofits
• Fieldwork in ecology, animal behavior, or environmental science
• Independent study projects that require travel or materials

• The Donald W. Pyle Award, recognizing outstanding undergraduate research in biology
• The Dowd-Lester Award, honoring a senior who has demonstrated exceptional achievement in the major
• The Biology Faculty Recognition Award, honoring a senior who has outstanding scholarly achievements and made contributions to the department and college
