Studying classics at Skidmore can take you far — literally. Classics majors have access to semester-long programs in Greece, Italy, and England, as well as faculty-led travel seminars focused on sites like Rome and the Parthenon. Students also join active archaeological digs, including the Kenchreai excavation in Greece, and can apply to summer programs at sites across Europe and the Middle East.

Classics opportunities abroad

From walking the streets of Rome to excavating ancient ruins in Greece, Skidmore classics students take their studies into the field. Department-approved programs in Greece, Italy, and England let you explore ancient texts, monuments, and cultures up close. Join faculty-led travel seminars to Athens or Rome, spend a semester abroad, or apply for hands-on archaeological excavations across Europe and the Middle East.

Want to dig into the ancient world — literally? Skidmore students can apply to nearly 100 excavation programs across Europe, including Greece, Italy, Spain, and the UK. These hands-on opportunities, listed through the Archaeological Institute of America and the American Anthropological Association, offer training in archaeological techniques at active classical sites.

Live and learn in the heart of the ancient world. College Year in Athens offers semester, yearlong, and summer programs focused on classical antiquity, with additional coursework in modern Greek language, history, and culture. Students can study Greek art and archaeology, philosophy, literature, political science, and more — no prior classics background required. You'll live in a quiet neighborhood just steps from the Agora and Acropolis.

Study ancient Rome where history happened. The Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (the "Centro") offers a semester-long program focused on archaeology, topography, and Roman history — ideal for classics and art history students. All participants take The Ancient City, a two-course deep dive into Rome’s past. Additional options include Latin, Greek, Italian, Renaissance/Baroque art history, and art conservation. Students live on Janiculum Hill, with views over the city’s rooftops.

Application deadlines:

  • Fall: March 15
  • Spring: October 15

Study classics in the heart of Roman Britain. The Advanced Studies in England program offers semester, yearlong, and summer options in the historic city of Bath, just two hours from London. Students can explore Romans in Britain or take Greek or Latin tutorials at Oxford — no prior experience required. You'll live in Georgian townhouses and learn in small, Oxford-style classes.

  • Full year or fall: March 31
  • Spring: October 31
  • Summer: February 18

In addition to traditional semesters abroad, classics faculty regularly lead trips to Greece and Italy. These travel seminars, sponsored by Skidmore OCSE, offer short-term, high-impact encounters with antiquity, from the religious and medical sanctuaries of the Hellenic world to mapping and exploring the Eternal City of Rome.
