Skidmore summer book list

Thirteen Skidmore College community members answered, "What's one book you're reading right now, or recommend reading this summer?" From sci-fi to memoir and more, here are their selections.

Skidmore’s GIS spongy moth

Skidmore’s GIS program merges science, creativity, and access to extensive data and resources to enhance faculty-student research, including a study of landscape-altering caterpillars.

Dining Services

Please visit the Dining Services website regularly for updates from The Spa, hours of operation, and other information.

 

Pop-up Grill: Dining Services is hosting a pop-up grill from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday throughout the summer. The grill features hamburgers, hot dogs, plant-based burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, and more outside Case Center. A $6.99 lunch combo meal includes your choice of a grill item, two sides, and a beverage. Ask about daily specials.

 

Summer hours for The Spa are 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Burgess Café is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please check the Dining Services website for hours for Murray-Aikins Dining Hall.

Carolyn Shapiro ’15 plays music rooted in the old songs of Appalachia. An art-making activity for kids begins at 5:30 p.m.; music begins at 6 p.m. on the lawn outside the Tang.

 

Upbeat on the Roof with Bruiser and Bicycle, Thursday, July 21

Led by Nick Whittemore and Keegan Graziane, Bruiser and Bicycle writes melodically rich songs inspired by the surreal and the macabre. An art-making activity for kids begins at 5:30 p.m.; music begins at 6 p.m.on the lawn outside the Tang.

SWB summer publication schedule

The next issue of the Bulletin will be published Wednesday, July 27. The Bulletin will be published biweekly and distributed to faculty and staff only through Aug. 24. It will also be posted online. The deadline for submissions is Monday at noon on the week of publication (e.g., submissions are due by noon on July 25 for the July 27 edition). To submit an announcement or for inquiries, please contact swb@skidmore.edu.

 

COVID-19 Updates

As a reminder, Saratoga County’s COVID-19 Community Level remains “Low,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and indoor masking is no longer required on campus, as indicated in a June 17 email to the Skidmore community. Should the Community Level return to “High,” the College will revisit these guidelines and provide a timely update to the community. The College’s Campus Planning webpage is up to date and includes information regarding current policies and guidelines, an archive of College messages, public health resources, the COVID-19 Dashboard, and more.

 

New issue of Scope magazine

The summer issue of Scope magazine will be distributed to all employees via campus mail this week. Please contact James Helicke if you do not receive a copy.

 

Skidmore Hoop House Opening Ceremony

Please join us from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, July 29, for beverages and local food as we officially open Skidmore’s hoop house, located between the Case Center parking lot and Wiecking Hall. Please contact Jen Natyzak for more information.

 

Skidmore SEFCU Banking

The SEFCU Skidmore branch is open from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday for the summer. The Wilton, Malta, Amsterdam, and Clifton Park branches are also available to members for any banking services that cannot be completed at the Skidmore ATM. Library Summer Book Club

In this book club, participants bring books they would like to share with the group as a kind of “show and tell.” Join us from noon to 1 p.m. July 27 and Aug. 31 on the Adirondack chairs in front of the library. Contact Hannah Matecko-Conti for more information.

 

9 Miles East Fall CSA

Skidmore students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to participate in the popular Saratoga community-supported agriculture (CSA) each fall. 9 Miles East Farm delivers a big assortment of freshly harvested vegetables each week for 12 weeks during the fall semester. The 2022 season is scheduled for Sept. 9 to Nov. 23. The cost is $360 for the 12-week season. A subscription is required; only 100 shares are available. Sign up online.

 

Athletics news

Skidmore College welcomes new Head Softball Coach Liz Neubinski and Assistant Athletic Director Peter Fisher. Neubinski was head coach at SUNY Cobleskill, while Fisher comes to Skidmore after holding a similar position at New York University.
