We will examine religious agency through a fascinating selection of special objects that
people make, consecrate, and use for religious purposes. Objects under discussion include
children’s Bibles, the fiery cross of the Klan, Mormon anointing oil, and Mormon
undergarments; ritual activities within Wicca, Santeria, and Islam will also be analyzed.
Presentations extend from the lunch hour session into session 3.

Two key questions are at the center of this lunchtime event: “What does work mean to
you?” and “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Through two exploratory
studies, we will examine the power of pop culture media in illustrating the work
experience. We will explain media effects, gender roles, the work of prostitution, and the
susceptibility of children to media’s influences.
