Athletic Council
Annual Report 1998-1999
The Athletic Council formally met four times
during the academic year 1998-9. Two new student representatives joined
the committee this year, Helen Black and Sarah Edwards.
Several rather routine issues were discussed
at different times during the year. These include the ongoing issue of
hazing among college sports teams. Coaches and Student Affairs have been
making persistent efforts to discourage inappropriate pressures on "rookie"
members, especially linked to alcohol, and to generally facilitate social
integrity among students.
In addition, AC discussed the Women's Hockey
team and the interest among some students to change its status. Future
possibilities were addressed as costs are currently prohibitive.
Tim Brown distributed the NCAA gender equity
survey completed at Skidmore, which was to be subsequently submitted to
the NCAA and the Department of Education in Washington. Tim also reported
on a number of initatives before the NCAA and solicited feedback regarding
Skidmore's priorities so that he could represent them at NCAA meetings.
Two more substantial issues were also addressed
by AC. The first pertains to the function of the Athletic Council and
its position in the organizational structure of the college. The conclusion
was drawn that the Faculty Handbook should be revised so that AC "recommend
to the Dean of the Faculty" (rather than All College Council as in the
previous arrangement). The suggestion was passed on to CFG, which then
drafted language and offered a motion on the faculty floor, which was
passed at the April 30 meeting.
The second substantial issue came from a
student-initiated proposal to build a "climbing wall" at the college.
Students representating the Outing Club, David Kovall, Chad Miller, Glen
Gibson and Joy Fahrenkrog, spearheaded this effort. They submitted a substantial
report on the possibilities and justification for a climbing wall. After
recognizing the main barriers of cost and space, the committee decided
to form a subcommittee to look into the possibilities of locations for
such a facility. This subcommittee was comprised of John Brueggemann,
Pat Oles and Tim Brown (AC members), Mike Hall (Financial Planning and
Budgeting), Todd Bermann (Facilities Services), Lori Dawson (Dance), Dave
Kovall (Outing Club).
The subcommittee investigated various sites
around campus, mostly in or near the Sports Center, and discussed the
possibilities with the whole AC. Members concluded that the most promising
site is on the exterior of the east facing wall of the Sports Center in
the southeast corner of the building. Outing Club members were encouraged
to gather more information in terms of what other schools have done (i.e.,
costs of building and upkeep, etc.) and what is possible in this prospective
site.
